Freshmen students in Ms. Freer's English classes were assigned to write a poem entitled "Where I'm From." Each student then chose their favorite line from their poem. Those lines are displayed below:
"WHERE WE'RE FROM" - Ms. Freer's Freshmen English Class, Period C
I am from a place with different faces Where I'm from, the sky is full of dancing stars I'm from God to blessed, from sins to forgiveness I'm from hatred like a spreading cancer that kills my soul I'm from an emotional battle where sadness and joy clash swords I'm from a twilight world where all my posters talk to me I'm from a crazy family, but other than that I love them and they love me I'm from the poor and the rich, from honesty to dishonesty I'm from the swing beneath the tree on which the tree's height I would always try to beat I am from photo albums and pictures in my upstairs closet telling me stories of a loving family and speaking to me a thousand words I am from trees that extend their arms to the sky! I am from a place where the grass is green like a newborn plain Where I'm from is considered mysterious I'm from what you called people running around like cats and dogs I am from a place, not just any place, a place I can call home I am from a dark cold world I'm from a city that has a market that sells wonders I am from a world where people can fly I'm from a place where everybody is equal I am from the shining sky when night turns into day I am from the pride of being Tapatia I am from a family that always tells me to never give up and try my best I am from St. Martin de Porres High School for a living. When I'm done, I go to baseball for nine innings.
Period D
I am from a place where dreams come true I'm from where there is great food; not to eat it would be rude I'm from the colors of the rainbow I'm from sports and tall uncles I'm from guitars and drums Where I'm from, spaghetti is as long as a worm I'm from the place where the trees and the grass stalk I'm from the place where the tomatoes are as red as a baby's bottom I'm from a family of cars that drives until it reaches empty I'm from a role to be myself in a world of war and peace who is living day to day with lots of love and peace I'm from a place where nobody's ever alone, like an S in a keyboard where nobody's alone I am from the breeze like the wind as the people move around. All is bound to be found I am from where the city lights glow at night. Everything seems so bright I am from where the mist of the rain feels good against my warm cheeks I'm from the cool terrifying movies I'm from a place where I feel forgotten and alone I'm from a rose that is delicate and harmful I'm from classy to flashy I'm from having those Kodak moments, so many memories I'm from where you want me to be from I am from a soccer ball I'm from the love people give and show I'm from the heart of God. We know love, peace and happiness I'm from Waukegan, the nicest place that treats us well.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear St. Martin de Porres High School Families:
Human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus have been identified in the United States. St. Martin de Porres High School is very aware of the current increased risk of virus infection and is taking action to ensure public safety.
We ask our families’ assistance in this regard by taking additional precautions and communicating with the school any concerns regarding their students that may assist us in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing by infected people. The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu in humans and may include fever of greater than 100 degrees F, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, chills, headache and body aches, and fatigue.
If individuals get sick, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that they remain home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from spreading the illness. Seeking medical care is encouraged particularly if an individual is severely ill.
According to the CDC, there are additional actions people can take to avoid catching or spreading infections such as swine flu.
The CDC advises:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
For more information about disease prevention and the swine flu, visit www.cdc.gov/swineflu.
Again, we ask that our families remain communicative with us regarding any serious student health concern by calling the school office at (847)623-5500.
Thank you.
CRN's Educational Enrichment Initiative
St. Martin de Porres High School has been selected as one of eight participating CRN schools for the Educational Enrichment Initiative which will begin to provide the supports for a teaching and learning system to maximize student achievement.
Principal Mike Odiotti and his team (Marlene Eby-English, Kumkum Ghosh-Science, Ruth Lyons-Social Studies) will commit approximately two weeks during the summer break to work with the additional seven CRN schools and Network representatives.
Principal Odiotti states: "The team of teachers that have committed to go have a deep commitment to urban education and have a strong collaborative spirit to help themselves and others think through important issues of curriculum development and student outcomes." The selection of SMdP to participate in this initiative is a reflection of the growth of SMdP's academic reputation under Principal Odiotti.
